Step 08 — Insects and Animal-Derived Dyes
Not all natural dyes come from plants. Some of the most historically significant and colourfast dyes in the world come from insects — tiny creatures whose bodies contain pigment concentrations that no plant can match. This note introduces the main animal-derived dyes and explains why they matter.
Cochineal — The King of Reds
Dactylopius coccus is a scale insect native to Mexico and Central America that feeds on prickly pear cacti. The female insect’s body is packed with carminic acid, a red pigment so intense that it takes roughly 70,000 insects to produce 450 grams of dried dye.
When the Spanish encountered cochineal in the Aztec markets of the early 1500s, they recognised immediately that it far surpassed anything available in Europe for producing vivid scarlet and crimson. It became one of the most valuable exports from the New World — worth more than silver by weight at certain points in history.
On an alum-mordanted wool, cochineal produces a reliable, brilliant crimson-red with excellent lightfastness. With an iron modifier (see Step 11 — Colour Modifiers and Afterbaths), it shifts to purple-grey. In an acid bath (cream of tartar or vinegar), it brightens to a warmer orange-red; in alkali, it moves toward violet and purple. This pH sensitivity makes cochineal one of the most versatile dyes in the natural dyer’s palette — see also Step 04 — The Science of Colour and Fibre.
Cochineal is widely sold by dye suppliers as dried insects or as a powder extract. For non-vegan dyers, it’s the single most rewarding purchase a beginner can make.
Lac Dye
Lac is produced by the lac insect (Kerria lacca), native to South and Southeast Asia. The insects secrete a resinous substance (shellac) as a protective coating; the dye is a byproduct of processing shellac for its resin. Lac produces reds and pinks similar to cochineal but with a slightly more orange warmth. It has been used in India for at least 3,000 years and was the dominant red dye in Asian textiles long before cochineal arrived from the Americas.
Kermes
Before cochineal, the most prized red in Europe came from kermes (Kermes vermilio), a scale insect found on the kermes oak in Mediterranean regions. Kermes red was the scarlet of medieval European luxury cloth — the word “crimson” derives from qirmiz, the Arabic name for kermes. It’s now largely a historical curiosity; cochineal produces a stronger dye with less effort.
Murex Purple — A Brief Note
Tyrian purple, extracted from the glands of Murex sea snails, is perhaps the most famous animal-derived dye of the ancient world — the purple of Roman emperors and Byzantine royalty. Producing it required enormous quantities of snails and labour, making it extraordinarily expensive and symbolically loaded. It is no longer commercially produced, but it remains a fascinating footnote in the history of colour and power (explored more in Step 01 — Natural Dye in History and Culture).
Vegan Alternatives
If you prefer to work without animal-derived materials, the same colour ranges are achievable: madder and henna for reds (see Step 07 — Plant Dye Sources), logwood and woad for purples and blues. The lightfastness may differ, but the palette is rich.
